Dr. George Blakey, III

Two or three residents are selected each year for the program beginning the following July. The program is either four or six years in duration. One resident each year is admitted to the six year curriculum which includes a medical degree. Residents may also enroll in the Graduate School and earn a PhD degree in a biological science or Master of Science in Dentistry degree by submitting an approved thesis based on a research project completed by the resident. These programs require an extended period of time.

The four-year and six-year programs are designed to prepare residents for a career in education, research, or clinical practice in the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery. The program involves a combination of didactic courses, seminars, and independent study, along with strong clinical training in all aspects of oral and maxillofacial surgery as well as in off-service rotations.

Formal didactic courses are completed in the first two years. During all years, residents attend weekly seminars and conferences, a monthly review of current literature, and numerous special lectures by recognized experts in health care and related biological sciences. Clinical training is aimed at providing the resident with the broadest possible exposure to oral and maxillofacial surgery including outpatient surgery and ambulatory anesthesia, trauma, orthognathic and craniofacial surgery, TMJ surgery, pre-prosthetic reconstructive, microsurgery, implant surgery, treatment of pathology and cosmetic surgery.

Residents in the six-year program are eligible to receive a MD degree from UNC School of Medicine after 18 months of medical school study. The six year curriculum is integrated and residents enter medical school only after completing the internship year. They are required to pass USMLE 1 and USMLE 2. They are required to complete a post-graduate General Surgery Internship year at the completion of medical school.

Training occurs primarily at UNC Hospitals and the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry. However, additional experience with different patient populations and clinical problems is provided at Veterans Administration Hospital, Durham; and Mission Hospital System, Asheville, NC. Elective and foreign rotations are also available.
