The degree of doctor of dental surgery with honors is awarded to outstanding
students who have achieved an outstanding academic and patient care record
as evidenced by an overall grade point average of 3.5 or above.

Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree with Distinction
The degree of doctor of dental surgery with distinction is awarded to outstanding students who have met the following criteria:
- Achievement of an outstanding academic and patient care record as evidenced by an overall grade point average of 3.5 or above
- Submission and approval of a scholarly paper of superior quality related to some aspect of dentistry.
- Students electing to attempt to graduate with distinction must meet with the associate dean for academic affairs prior to the beginning of the fourth year in order to determine eligibility and to make application for the degree.
- At this time, the student must submit a proposal for the scholarly paper. The student must also identify a faculty member(s) with whom he or she will be working with on the paper and who will oversee the quality of, and approve, the final submitted manuscript. This approval is confirmed by the faculty member’s signature on a form obtained from the office of academic affairs.
- The paper must not have been a previously-submitted manuscript or a manuscript that is close to submission, and the student must be the first author on the final scholarly paper.
- Completed papers must be submitted to the Office of Academic Affairs no later than February 15 of the senior year. The paper will be reviewed by an appropriate faculty committee and the student will be informed of the results by April 1 of the senior year.
