DDS Academic Performance Policies

Grades

For dental students the following definitions will be used for the assignment of grades:

A Mastery of course content at the highest level of attainment that can reasonably be expected of students at a given stage of development. The A grade states clearly that the student has shown such outstanding promise in the aspect of the discipline under study that the student may be strongly encouraged to continue.
B Strong performance demonstrating a high level of attainment for a student at a given stage of development. The B grade states that the student has shown solid promise in the aspect of the discipline under study.
C A totally acceptable performance demonstrating an adequate level of attainment for a student at a given stage of development. The C grade states that, while not yet showing unusual promise, the student may continue to study in the discipline with reasonable hope of intellectual development.
D A marginal performance in the required exercises demonstrating a minimal passing level of attainment for a student at a given stage of development. The D grade states that the student has given no evidence of prospective growth in the discipline; an accumulation of D grades should be taken to mean that the student would be well advised not to continue in the academic field.
F For whatever reasons, an unacceptable performance. The F grade indicates that the student's performance in the required exercises has revealed almost no understanding of the course content and that remediation is needed.
AB A temporary grade of AB (absent from final examination) is assigned when a student is absent from a final examination, regardless of the circumstances. Such absence may be excused for significant physical or emotional illness or for serious personal or family problems. The absence may be excused by the assistant dean for academic affairs if written verification of the illness or problem is received within forty-eight hours of the scheduled examination. Verification typically would come from the Student Health Service, personal physician, minister, or lawyer. An excused AB grade may be removed upon completion of the final examination without restriction as to the grade assigned. Failure to remove an AB grade by completing a final examination within thirty days of the previously scheduled examination will result in a grade of F. An unexcused absence may not be removed and converts to an F.
IN A temporary grade of IN may be assigned when a student is unable to complete all the work required for a course, due largely to circumstances beyond the student's control. The IN grade is not intended to be used when the course work has been unsatisfactory, even though retesting or remediation is planned. Failure to remove a temporary grade of IN (work incomplete) prior to the end of the subsequent semester or summer session will result in a grade of F. The grade of IN may be removed upon completion of required course work without restriction as to the grade assigned.

A student with a grade of IN, AB, or F in any core didactic, laboratory, or clinical course that has not been successfully completed will not be eligible for graduation at the end of the final semester in residence.
