Admissions Information

REQUIREMENTS

Candidates should have a quantitative aptitude and a strong commitment to research. A prior masters or doctoral degree is not required, though candidates with advanced degrees may be given preference.

APPLICATION DEADLINE AND MATERIALS

Admission criteria are applied equally to all applicants regardless of race, gender, national origin or religion. The University of North Carolina encourages minority students to apply.

Individuals with significant background in biological sciences, dentistry, and/or medicine who have an interest in developing research skills and focus, and studying current issues in oral biology are encouraged to apply. Preference is given to students who wish to study for the Ph.D. degree. Research experience is an asset, and a statement of research interests and goals is desirable.

Selection of candidates will be done on a competitive basis by faculty of the Oral Biology Ph.D. Program serving on a selection committee. Candidates' research interests, research qualifications, and appropriate opportunities will be significant factors in selection.

Applications are generally accepted for admission to the Fall semester, and preference will be given to applications received by the UNC Graduate School by January 31. Applicants sending their materials later than the January 31 deadline have less opportunity for admission. The goal of the Oral Biology Program Committee is to have all admissions decisions made by April 1 for students to begin classes the following fall semester. Most candidates are able to complete the program within five years.

A completed application packet for the Oral Biology Ph.D. Program includes an application form for the UNC Graduate School, all transcripts since high school, documentation of previous scientific or medical studies, results of the GRE (and TOEFL for international applicants), three letters of recommendation, a letter of interest, and the application fee.

The UNC Graduate School requires the GRE for all applicants, and has a recommended guideline of a minimum score of 50%ile in each section of the GRE General Test (verbal, quantitative).

BACKGROUND CHECK

Each applicant must complete the background check questions and return them to the program director.

International students are required to take the TOEFL exam. On the paper-based examination, the Graduate School requires a minimum TOEFL score of 550 with a minimum score of 50 on each subsection. On the computer-based examination, a minimum TOEFL score of 213 with a minimum of 18 on each subsection is required. No exceptions are made.

The exam score must be current (less than two years old). You must send payment for the non-refundable application fee ($60) in U.S. funds or international money order. This fee cannot be waived. Applications that arrive without the required fee will remain on file, unprocessed, pending receipt of the fee. The Graduate School will notify you that your application was received only after the fee has been paid and the application has been processed.
