Oral Epidemiology PhD Program

When do applications need to be received?

Completed applications are due January 1 for entry the following fall semester.

Can I start the program during any semester, or only in the fall semester? Only in the fall semester?

Is there an Internet site that gives information about the program? Most of the current information you need about the PhD program in Oral Epidemiology, including information about procedures for making application to the program, can be found at our Internet site under "Prospective Students", "Advanced Dental Education", "Oral Epidemiology". The Website probably is not current regarding some of the fees listed for tuition etc., but it should be close. (If you do not have access to the Internet, please write back and I'll be happy to copy off the information and send it to you.) Many questions you might have about the program can be found in the links from our Website --- specifically, the UNC Graduate School web link and the UNC Department of Epidemiology web link.

What classes would I take as part of the program, and how long does it take to complete that coursework?

Usually the first 2.0 - 2.5 years are spent doing full time coursework to get requirements completed, then the last 1.5-2.0 years are spent doing dissertation work. Course descriptions can be found at the School of Public Health web site given above. The typical series of courses for the PhD Program in Oral Epidemiology is:

Fall Year 1: BIOS 110, EPID 150, EPID 168, EPID 390, HPAA 127, and the oral epidemiology journal club
Spring Year 1: BIOS 145, EPID 268, EPID 303, HPAA 228
Fall Year 2: BIOS 165, EPID 203, EPID 269, epidemiology elective course, and the oral epidemiology journal club
Spring Year 2: EPID 201, EPID 303, epidemiology elective course, teaching requirement
Summer Year 2: EPID 315

Also during Year 2 you are starting to think about dissertation topics and working on getting that together, and also taking the doctoral qualifying examinations.

Do I need to take the GRE and TOEFL examinations?

All students who make application to the Graduate School, whether US or international students, must take the GRE test, but only international students need to take the TOEFL exam. Basically, admission to the Oral Epidemiology program is the same as admissions to the Department of Epidemiology --- it's just that the special emphasis on oral disease comes from your taking some additional (not replacement) coursework in the epidemiology of oral diseases. Be sure to click on the links to the Dept. of Epidemiology web site and the UNC Graduate School web site provided above for further application procedures.
