Prospective students must submit the following to PASS to complete their application:
For International Students:
Admission criteria are applied equally to all applicants regardless of race, sex, color, national origin, or religion. The University and the Department encourage minority students applications. Each year, approximately 8 applicants are selected by mid-October and invited to attend the two-day interview held in November at the School of Dentistry in Chapel Hill. This interview provides the faculty, staff, and current graduate students with an opportunity meet the candidates. Upon completion of the interviews, prospective students will be notified in writing of their selection for the program.
The curriculum at UNC involves approximately 60% clinic participation in the areas of Fixed, Removable, Implant and Maxillofacial Prosthodontics. Didactic offerings in Prosthodontics, research methods, dental education, oral pathology, biostatistics, etc. are required. The non-Prosthodontics didactic offerings are concentrated during the first year. In addition, each resident is required to spend one year as a graduate teaching assistant (GTA), which usually involves teaching at the pre-doctoral level for up to 10 hours per week during the third year of the program. Research is emphasized in order to stimulate the resident to make clinical judgments based on sound scientific principles, and to afford the resident the ability to critically evaluate the scientific literature. An independent research project is mandatory for successful completion of the program. The minimal clinical requirements during the three-year program include 160 units of fixed prosthodontics, 25 units of removable partial dentures, and 30 complete denture patients, and all of the maxillofacial patients assigned. While residents participate in much of the laboratory phase of Prosthodontic treatment, emphasis is placed on direct patient care. Many residents achieve both award winning research projects and exceed the minimal requirements. The 36-month curriculum in Prosthodontics requires the successful completion of a Master of Science thesis project. In addition, following completion of the M.S. degree, a Certificate in Prosthodontics is awarded. Adequate time is afforded each resident within the curriculum for conducting their thesis research, and several options are currently available for submission of the thesis. Deadlines for selection of a thesis topic, advisor and committee, for submission of a research protocol, and for timely completion of the completed thesis are well defined for the residents.
Each applicant must complete the background check questions and return them to the program director.
International applicants must submit official academic records bearing the signature of the registrar or another academic official and either a raised or ink stamp or seal of the issuing institution. Records must be issued in the original language and be accompanied by certified English translations. International students are required to take the TOEFL exam, with a minimum total score of 550 and a minimum score of 50 in each section. The exam score must be current (less than two years old). When registering for the test, you should indicate the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill Graduate School (institution #5816) as a score recipient. The TOEFL test is administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS), CN6151, Princeton, New Jersey 08541-6151. You should take the test no later than August to ensure that your score arrives by the application deadline. International students must submit a financial certification as part of the Graduate School application. A completed Financial Certificate outlining financial support available to you, along with original evidence to support the amounts indicated (bank statements, scholarship letters, etc.), must be submitted along with your application for admission. 2008-2009 Financial Certificate
