Converting PowerPoint Slides to HTMLWe recommend that you take the following two steps in preparing your PowerPoint files for presentation via the Web.
For a discussion about the benefits of converting proprietary file formats into HTML and PDF formats, please see the following page: Online Materials and Proprietary Formats. It's important when converting PowerPoint slides to HTML to make sure the images are optimized to be viewed with the screen resolution that most viewers will be using. The standards we identify below work best for the images displayed on the first group of student laptop computers purchased - that of the Class of 2002. NOTE ABOUT FILENAMES: If the name of your original PowerPoint file has spaces in it, you will need to rename the file and delete any spaces before you convert the file to html. The spaces get coded by the Web server and can cause problems (i.e. page not found or the 404 error) when the pages are retrieved by a browser. NOTE ABOUT BACKGROUNDS: Take special care in choosing the background you wish to use for your presentation. Since most online presentations will be partnered with a PDF file of the presentation for printing purposes, consider how the background/text combination will print out as well as display. Contrasting, even colors work best, especially considering they will likely be printed on monochrome laser printers rather than color inkjets. NOTE ABOUT AUDIO: If you have any audio portions to a presentation that you want to make available online, you will have to prepare your presentation following a specific set of guidelines. The document "Preparing PowerPoint Files for RealMedia" describes this process in detail and is also available in Adobe Acrobat printable format. After you have prepared your presentation according to these guidelines, submit it to David Arnold for conversion to RealMedia format. NOTE ABOUT ANIMATIONS: We highly discourage the conversion of animations in the HTML version of your presentation. In order for users to view animations, they must download a special plug-in that does not function correctly with all browsers. NOTE ABOUT PRINTABLE VERSION: Please create your printable version using Adobe PDFMaker or Adobe Distiller, part of Acrobat 4.0 (DO NOT use Acrobat 5.0, as it is extremely buggy and not universally compatible). Please select Handouts (6 per page) and Black and White. Choose which version of PowerPoint you are using to view customized guidelines: Last modified:
