Oral Epidemiology PhD Program

Dr. Dan Caplan

The University of North Carolina offers a program leading to a PhD degree in Epidemiology under the cooperative auspices of the School of Dentistry's Department of Dental Ecology and the School of Public Health's Departments of Epidemiology and Health Policy and Administration. The strong, nationally recognized Department of Epidemiology at the School of Public Health has a well-established doctoral program, and Oral Epidemiology has been taught as part of the Program in Dental Public Health for many years. The integration of the wealth of resources in the three departments makes this program unique.

The goal of the Oral Epidemiology Program is to provide students with the ability to identify, analyze and predict changes in oral diseases and conditions. These conditions include dental caries, oral cancer, oral mucosal lesions, periodontal diseases, craniofacial and dentofacial anomalies, and systemic diseases that affect, and are affected by, oral health. Degree recipients will have the academic foundation, advanced knowledge, and skills needed to conduct, interpret and evaluate sophisticated epidemiologic investigations and clinical research projects.
