2007 ALUMNI

Tom Bouwens (2007) is a native of Holland, MI. He graduated from Hope College in Michigan with a BA degree in chemistry and a minor in mathematics with Magna Cum Laude honors where he was a four-time All-American swimmer. He attended the University of Michigan, School of Dentistry where he won several scholarships for academic excellence including the William S. Kramer Award of Excellence. At UM he was an AADR Student Research Fellow and NIDCR Short-Term Research Trainee. He received several awards and honors at his dental graduation, including the Alpha Omega Award for high academic honors in his class. He was also selected for Omicron Kappa Upsilon. Tom’s wife, Theresa, is a Michigan native and an elementary school teacher. Tom Bouwens and his wife have moved back to Michigan where Tom will be joining a practice in Holland, Michigan.

Matthew T. Goslee (2007) is a recent DDS Graduate from the School of Dentistry at the University of Connecticut in Farmington, CT. He is a graduate of Gettysburg College in Gettysburg, PA where he received a BA degree in political science with a minor in philosophy. At UConn Matt had a keen interest in international health and was involved in projects in both Haiti and Peru. At graduation, Matt won both the Public Health Dentistry Award and the Community Service Award and the prestigious Alpha Omega Award for high academic honors in his class. Matt’s wife, Julie, completed her psychiatry residency here at UNC-CH. Matt Goslee will be joining a practice in the Fairfield area of Connecticut and has moved with his family.

Jenny Jackson (2007) is a native of Raleigh who received her BS degree in microbiology at North Carolina State University, where she was Valedictorian of the Class of 2000 and selected for Phi Beta Kappa honors. She graduated from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) where she had been involved in a number of research and community-service related projects. She received several graduation honors including recognition as Class Salutatorian and graduated Magna Cum Laude and was selected for Omicron Kappa Upsilon at HSDM. Jenny’s husband, Rick, is pursuing an MBA/JD program here at UNC-CH. Jenny Jackson and her husband will be relocated to Ashville where Jenny will be starting her own practice.

2006 ALUMNI

Ronald Hsu (Certificate and MS in 2006) is a native of Taiwan who spent his formative years here in the United States. His collegiate years were spent at the University of Washington where he won Phi Beta Kappa honors. He received his DDS degree from UW in 2003. Ron won the UW Table Clinic competition in 2002 and was awarded the most outstanding presentation award at the Hinman Student Research Symposium. Ron’s spouse, Misty, is a full-time mother of two young children. Ron is currently in private practice in Vancouver, Washington.

Kavita Mathu-Muju (Certificate and MPH in 2006) is a native of Canada who received her DMD degree from the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg in 1993. She spent the early part of her career as a contract dentist providing dental care for aboriginal children in rural Manitoba and has a long-term professional involvement in “Kindness and Action”, a Central American dental mission group. Kavita served as Director of the Undergraduate Pediatric Dental Program at the University of Manitoba in 2000-03. Kavita is currently a full time faculty member at the University of Kentucky in Lexington.

Halley R. White (Certificate and MPH in 2006) is a native of Washington State who graduated from Dartmouth College (Cum Laude). She served the officer chain of our local chapter of the American Association of Women Dentists and was a student liaison to the North Carolina Dental Society. She garnered a 2001 AADR Student Research Fellowship that culminated a research award at the 2002 AADR meeting and a first place award in the local table clinic competition. Halley is currently opening her private practice in Wilmington, North Carolina.

2005 ALUMNI

Martha Hardaway (Certificate and MS 2005) is a native of North Carolina who attended UNC-CH where she completed her degree in Biology. She completed her DMD at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in 2002. Martha was a MUSC Presidential Scholar and served as Editor of the College of Dentistry Yearbook and was President of the MUSU Student Research Group. Martha was awarded the Strowd Roses Foundation in Hispanic Infant Oral Health and she spent two months in language immersion in Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Martha is receiving teaching experience with the department of BOHP. Martha is currently in practice in Boone, NC with Michael Mayhew and Stacy Conn.

Elizabeth Shick (Certificate and MPH 2005) is a native of North Carolina who completed her BS degree in Pharmacy here at UNC-CH where she is a member of the UNC-CH School of Dentistry Class of 2002. She was active in research leadership and community activities and has spent considerable time in volunteer activities where she has been a Spanish translator in a medical/dental setting. Liz has been involved with dental mission work in Mexico, Peru and Russia. Liz resides in Raleigh, NC.

Maria Wang (Certificate and PhD 2005) is a native of the People's Republic of China where she completed her DDS and MS degrees in Stomatology at Chengdu, PR in 1996. She won the Derek K. Turner Research Award at the school's Research and Review Day in 2000 and recently completed a doctoral degree in Oral Biology here at UNC-CH. Maria is currently in a post-doctoral fellowship program in pharmacology and is also serving as an Instructor in our Pediatric Dentistry department.

2004 ALUMNI

Michael Rossitch (Certificate and MS, 2004) is a native of Winston-Salem who completed his collegiate and dental school studies here at UNC-CH. As a dental student Michael was frequently on the Dean's List and recognized for his contributions and service to the dental school and community. He served as President of the Spurgeon Dental Society. While in our graduate program he was awarded one of three national AAPD/OMNII Research Fellowship Awards in 2003-04 and was awarded the Turner Award for Outstanding Research at the 2004 UNC-CH Research in Review Day. Michael is currently a member of the Children's Dentistry of Woodstock, GA.

Matthew Savage (Certificate and MS, 2004) is a native of Burlington who completed his collegiate studies here at UNC-CH. He was frequently on the Dean's List and was recognized for his contributions and service to the dental school and community. While in our graduate program Matt was one of three graduate students in the U.S. who was awarded a 2002-03 AAPD/OMNII Research Fellowship Award and was a first place winner in the Advanced Dental Education Competition in the School's Table Clinic Competition in 2004. He was also one of eight national finalists for the Academy's Graduate Student Research Award. Matt is currently in the practice of Sonny Long and Judy Laxer in Charlotte.

2003 ALUMNI

Krissy Coffield (Certificate and MS, 2003) is a native of Washington, NC, who attended the School of Science and Math and then UNC-CH for her collegiate studies. She received a BA degree magna cum laude in psychology and a minor in chemistry in 1995, graduating with Phi Beta Kappa honors. She attended dental school here at Carolina where she graduated with honors. She recently was named the first recipient of the James R. Roche Award of Excellence by the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. The award is granted to the individual who scores the highest on the written section of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry Examination. Krissy is currently an associate in private practice in Raleigh, NC.

Todd Grooms (Certificate and MS, 2003) is a native of Gastonia, completed his collegiate studies here at UNC-CH, having received his BS in biology with a minor in chemistry in 1995. He was a research assistant in the UNC Craniofacial Center while attending college. Todd attended dental school here at Carolina where he was involved as a student leader as well as a frequent community volunteer. As a dental student he received the Zane E. Eargle Scholarship, an honor calling attention to humanism and high involvement in school activities. He graduated from the school of dentistry, receiving Omicron Kappa Upsilon honors. Todd is currently in private practice in Burlington, NC.

Ryan Haldeman (Dual Certification in Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, 2003) is a native of California who spent most of his life in Iowa. He attended the University of Iowa for his college days and was a member of the DDS Class of 1998 at Iowa. He was an active student, researcher and leader. He served as student body president at the University of Iowa and was elected to Omicron Kappa Upsilon at graduation. While in our graduate program he was recognized as a Babcock and Sapp Fellow. After graduation, he moved to Asheville where he entered into a private practice.

Leslee Lancaster Huggins (Certificate) is a native of Texarkana, TX. She graduated from Angelo State University in Texas where in 1990 she received a BS in chemistry with magna cum laude honors. She attended dental school at the Baylor College of Dentistry where she had an outstanding record of leadership, research and scholarship. She is listed in Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities and graduated from Baylor with Omicron Kappa Upsilon honors in 1994. She completed a master's degree in Orthodontics at St. Louis University in 1996. Leslee is currently a faculty member in pediatric dentistry at St. Joseph Health Services in Rhode Island.

Marianne Mills Sheroan (Certificate and MS, 2003) is a native of the rural Kentucky town of Mayfield . She attended Center College in Danville , KY where she was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate in 1996. She attended the University of Louisville where she received dual degrees in dentistry (DMD) and Master's Degree in Oral Biology (MS) completing her studies in May 2000. While attending our graduate program she was honored as a Freedland Advanced Education Fellow and was awarded the Turner Award for Outstanding Research at the 2003 UNC-CH School of Dentistry Research in Review Day. She was also awarded a prestigious AAPD OMNII Research Fellowship for 2002-03. Currently she is teaching at the University of Louisville and working in a private practice.
