Tuition & Fees Tuition & Fees
Graduate students must pay tuition and fees for all three years of study and training. The tuition and fees are usually less during the third year of studies than quoted above. These charges are subject to change at any meeting of the NC Board of Trustees and a yearly increase of 5 - 10% should be anticipated each year.
Tuition remission is the reduction of the out-of-state tuition rate to the rate set for NC residents. The difference between in- and out-of-state tuition is a scholarship provided by the NC State Legislature for students with identifiable talents who have been awarded research, teaching, or graduate assistantships. Tuition remission is awarded by the semester. No student may receive an award for more than four semesters. To meet the general eligibility requirements, the student must be registered for nine or more credit hours during the semester of the award. The number of awards available is limited. There is no application process for tuition remission. Nominees are selected from among all out-of-state students, including international students, who are within their first four semesters and have assistantships covering a full semester. Due to limited funding, having an assistantship does not guarantee tuition remission. Out-of-state students and students holding a "green card" are encouraged to establish legal residence in North Carolina and to apply for classification as state residents for tuition purposes. State laws preclude international students with a non-resident status (i.e., international students who do not hold a green card) from establishing residency, so these students must pay the out-of-state rate in all semesters unless tuition remission is granted. Guidelines and application forms for establishing residency are available at The UNC Graduate School.
