Welcome

Dr. Ray C. Williams

On behalf of the faculty, staff and students of the Department of Periodontology, welcome to our home page. The Department of Periodontology is a large and diverse academic department committed to teaching, patient care, research and service. Our faculty are distinguished leaders in the specialty of Periodontology and biomedical research who collectively and individually bring a wealth of expertise and enthusiasm to the overall mission of the Department. As a team we proudly offer our patients, predoctoral students, graduate students and visiting scholars and Fellows outstanding opportunities for patient care and for education.

The Graduate Training Program in Periodontology is lead by Dr. David W. Paquette, Assistant Professor of Periodontology, and Graduate Program Director. This training program, begun in 1968, has trained over 110 women and men in the specialty of Periodontology. These individuals are located around the world in private practice, in academic positions, or in positions with industry.

The Center for Oral and Systemic Diseases is lead by Dr. Steven Offenbacher, Professor of Periodontology, and Director of the Center. This Center, and its team of clinician scientists and Fellows, focuses on basic and clinical research that examines the relationships between oral infection and the risk for systemic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, preterm low birthweight infants and diabetes.

The Comprehensive Center for Inflammatory is lead by Dr. Patrick Flood, Associate Professor of Periodontology, and Director of the Center. Established in 1999, the Comprehensive Center for Inflammatory Disorders is one of six national Comprehensive Oral Health Research Centers of Discovery created by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research to improve the oral health of Americans.

The Department of Periodontology is one of nine institutions from around the world chosen to be an International Team for Oral Implantology (ITI) Scholarship Center. Each year a young dentist is chosen by the Education Committee of the ITI Foundation to be supported in the Department in a training program that focuses on all aspects of treating patients with the ITI Dental Implant System.

The Department's Visiting Scholar Program welcomes scientists and clinicians from all over the world who come to UNC for educational experiences in basic and clinical research and in patient care. This Program provides training opportunities, which are from one month to a year, for individuals who are on sabbatical leave or other types of leave from their parent institutions.

Thank you for visiting the Department of Periodontology's home page. We look forward to hearing from you.
