PRESS RELEASE: October 22, 1999

New York, NY - Dr. David Felton, Chair and Associate Professor of Prosthodontics, was inducted as Vice President of the American College of Prosthodontists at its annual session on Friday, October 22, 1999 in New York City. Dr. Felton began his 1-year term as Vice President immediately. The winners of John J. Sharry Prosthodontics Research Competition and the table clinic competition were also announced at the ACP's annual session. Dr. Sompop Bencharit (doctoral student in Prosthodontics) was awarded second place in the John J. Sharry Research Competition and Dr. Chatchai Kunavisarut (graduate student in Prosthodontics) was awarded second place for his table clinic presentation. Dr. Michael McCracken (UNC DDS '93) was awarded 1st place in the John J. Sharry Research Competition.

UNC School of Dentistry -As the fall semester begins and new students arrive, so do new faculty members. On Tuesday, August 24th the School of Dentistry welcomed its latest additions to our Carolina family. The New Faculty Reception was held at the George Watts Hill Alumni Center. New members were introduced from four departments. Dr. David Felton, chair of Prosthodontics, welcomed the return of Dr. Konstantina Dedi. Dr. Dedi participated in a teaching fellowship in Prosthodontics in 1998. She earned her DDS degree from the University of Athens, her MS degree and Certificate in Prosthodontics from the University of Missouri, and completed the Maxillofacial Prosthetics and Dental Oncology program at the University of Texas' MD Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Dedi is a native of Athens, Greece. Dr. Ronald Strauss, chair of Dental Ecology, introduced Drs. Nancy Costello, John Elter, Rosemary McKaig and Ms. Mary George, Laura Jansen and Linda Stewart to the department. Dr. Tim Turvey, chair of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, introduced Dr. Jeffrey Jelic. Dr. Valerie Murrah, chair of Diagnostic Sciences & General Surgery, introduced two new faculty members, Drs. John Tiffee and William Murdock.

Dr. I. Kenneth Adisman

Chapel Hill, NC - Dr. I. Kenneth Adisman, adjunct professor in the Department of Prosthodontics, has established "The Friends of Joan Fund" to honor his late wife. Mrs. Joan Adisman died in June, 1998. The couple lived in NYC before moving to Durham in 1990. Dr. Adisman joined the department and has taught in the Graduate Prosthodontics Program at the School of Dentistry since that time. His specialty focus is Maxillofacial Prosthodontics. The memorial fund has been designated to benefit the Maxillofacial Division of the Department of Prosthodontics. Tax deductible contributions can be made to "The Friends of Joan Fund" by contacting the Dental Foundation of North Carolina at the UNC School of Dentistry in Chapel Hill.
PRESS RELEASE: June 28, 1999

Chapel Hill, NC - Dr. Ray McArthur (associate professor) and Dr. Tony Molina (assistant professor) in the UNC Department of Prosthodontics joined 65 volunteers from the School of Dentistry to provide dental care to Special Olympic athletes through the Special Smiles program at the UNC Student Union this week. Dental volunteers are screening athletes, applying sealants and fitting mouth guards as a part of the Special Smiles program. Over 4,500 athletes are expected to take part in the week long program. The screening data will be used by the Center of Disease Control to learn about the dental health of people with development disabilities. Special Olympic World Game teams will also receive the screening results in hopes that athletes needing follow-up care will see a dentist once they return home.

The Department of Prosthodontics held it's Annual Faculty Retreat in North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains again this year. The 3-day retreat was held at the Pine Bridge Inn and Conference Center in Spruce Pine, NC on June 10, 11 and 12.

Dr. Jack Sowter

Myrtle Beach, SC - Dr. Jack Sowter (Professor) was presented the "Outstanding Faculty Member" Award from the American College of Dentist as voted upon by the University of North Carolina DDS Class of 1999. The award was presented to Dr. Sowter at the Annual Session of the NC Dental Society held in Myrtle Beach, SC on May 21 - 23, 1999. Please join the Department of Prosthodontics in congratulating Dr. Sowter on this outstanding honor.

Dr. Lyndon Cooper, DDS, PhD

Calgary, Canada - Dr. Lyndon Cooper, DDS, PhD, was elevated to Active Fellowship in the Academy of Prosthodontics at its annual meeting in Calgary, Alberta, Canada this week. The Academy of Prosthodontics is an elected group of leaders in academics and private practice in Prosthodontics from the US and Canada. Dr. Cooper joins Active Fellows Dr. David Felton and Dr. Albert Guckes, and Life Fellow Dr. I. Kenneth Adisman in representing the UNC School of Dentistry in this prestigious organization.

Dr. Anthony Molina

Chapel Hill, NC - Dr. Anthony Molina (Assistant Professor) of the Department of Prosthodontics, UNC School of Dentistry, was awarded the Richard F. Hunt Award for teaching excellence at the 1999 Spurgeon Awards Banquet on April 14. The Banquet was held in the Great Hall of the Hill Alumni Center on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus. Awards for teaching excellence, staff appreciation, clinical excellence and academic achievement were presented. The banquet was planned by the Spurgeon Dental Society under the leadership of Ms. Heather Brown, a second year DDS student and Vice-President of the Spurgeon Dental Society. The ceremony was presided over by Mr. Paul Cloninger, a third year DDS student and President. Other winners from the Department of Prosthodontics are:
