The Department of Prosthodontics hosted Dr. George Zarb of the University of Toronto's Faculty of Dentistry at their annual December continuing education program. Dr. Zarb was the featured speaker for "Prosthodontic Update: A Clinical Perspective on TMD and Dental Implants" held on December 13, 2002. Many area dental professionals spent the day with Dr. Zarb at UNC's William & Ida Friday Center for Continuing Education as he presented updates on temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and dental implants.

 
PRESS RELEASE: November 8, 2002

Dr. Lyndon Cooper and Dr. David Felton were affirmed as officers and members of the Board of Directors of the American College of Prosthodontists during the ACP Annual Session in Orlando, Florida on November 8, 2002. Dr. Cooper will serve as Director of Research and Dr. Felton will serve as Immediate Past President of the ACP.

Dr. Konstantina Dedi was recognized as a new Diplomate of the American College of Prosthodontists on November 8 during the ACP 2002 Annual Session in Orlando, Florida. Dr. Dedi qualified for the award by successfully completing the American Board of Prosthodontics certification examinations. Dr. David Eggleston, ABP President and Dr. David Felton, ACP President presented Dr. Dedi with her award.

 
PRESS RELEASE: September 4, 2002

Dr. Abdullah Alsiyabi, second year graduate resident in Prosthodontics was awarded a Freedland Advanced Dental Education Fellowship in August 2002. Abdullah is from Oman. He received his dental training from University College Dental School in Cork, Ireland and the Military Dental Centre in Al-khoudh, Oman. He attended the American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics meeting in Chicago in 2002.

The Dental Foundation of North Carolina Inc. awarded 27 fellowships and nearly $110,000 to post-doctoral students enrolled in graduate programs at the UNC School of Dentistry for the 2002-2003 academic year. The DFNC Fellowships Committee selects recipients from a pool of nominations submitted by school faculty members. Selection is based primarily on recommendations, financial need, and academic excellence. Established in 1950, the DFNC is a foundation that raises private funds to aid and promote education, research, patient care, and service at the School of Dentistry. It is operated exclusively for charitable, educational and scientific purposes that benefit the School of Dentistry.

 
PRESS RELEASE: June 27, 2002

Drs. Tony Molina, Dimitrios Mylonas, Maria Chatzistarou, and Abdullah Alsiyabi attended the 20th Anniversary International Symposium on Ceramics held June 21-23, 2002 in San Diego, California. The Symposium topics highlighted the esthetic challenge, a teamwork approach, the selection of restorative materials and quality control.

 
PRESS RELEASE: June 14, 2002

The UNC Department of Prosthodontics celebrated the successful completion of it's graduate program by three of it's residents on June 14. The Washington Duke Inn in Durham, NC was the site of a banquet held in honor of Drs. Maria Chatzistarou, Ingeborg De Kok and Luisa Medina. Surrounded by family and friends, faculty and staff, Prosthodontics graduate program director and chair, Dr. David Felton presented all three with their masters degree diplomas. Maria, Ingeborg and Luisa had each successfully defended their thesis in April. All three will stay at UNC for the coming year. Dr. Maria Chatzistarou will become the Prosthodontics Fellow on July 1, Dr. Ingeborg De Kok will become the Astra Tech Fellow in the Bone Biology Laboratory on July 1; and Dr. Luisa Medina will begin a compressed (US) DDS program in August.

 
PRESS RELEASE: June 11, 2002

Dr. Ed Kanoy

Dean John Stamm announced on June 11 that Dr. Ed Kanoy has been recommended to the University as the new Chair of Prosthodontics. The appointment will go into effect on July 1, 2002 and extend for a five-year term. Dean Stamm said, "the School is very fortunate that a widely respected and gifted teacher, clinician, and administrator in the person of Dr. Kanoy has agreed to lead the Department."

Dr. Kanoy is a Clinical Professor of Prosthodontics at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry. He received a BS in Physics and Mathematics from Davidson College, an MA in Physiology and Pharmacology from Duke University, and a DDS from the University of North Carolina.

Dr. Kanoy won the Richard F. Hunt Award for teaching excellence in 2000. He has received Faculty Appreciation Awards from dental classes eleven times since joining the faculty in 1978.

 
PRESS RELEASE: April 29, 2002

The Department of Prosthodontics and the Hispanic Dental Association of the UNC School of Dentistry participated in HOPE's Global Outreach Day on Saturday, April 27 at the Rogers Kerr Middle School in Durham, NC. On April 27, volunteers in over 300 cities in 75 countries engaged in a day of service to help the poor and underserved. Last year (2001) 75,000 volunteers reached over 500,000 people.

Dr. Gustavo Tapia, Fellow in the Department of Prosthodontics and member of the Hispanic Dental Association presented "Why Do You Need to See a Dentist?" His material was presented in both English and Spanish. A very basic screening exam was available and, if needed, participants received referral information regarding any identified potential problems. There was information regarding the dental specialties and why patients should seek out those specialists.

Dr. Tom Hummert, Assistant Professor in the Department of Prosthodontics presented information on "The Role of the Dentist in Identification and Treatment of Snoring and Sleep Apnea." Screening questions were used to help identify sleep-related disorders. Snoring is very common, 1of 10 Americans snore and 1 of 4 adult males snore. Global Outreach Day is in its 3rd year.

Ms. Fonda Strickland of the UNC Department of Orthodontics-Research also participated. Procter & Gamble supported this outreach project by donating toothpaste samples.

Drs. Felton and Dedi

Chapel Hill, NC - Dr. Dina Dedi, clinical assistant professor in Prosthodontics, became a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics in February by successfully completing the American Board of Prosthodontics certification examinations. She joined the Department of Prosthodontics at UNC in 1998 as a teaching fellow, and joined the faculty in 1999. Dr. Dedi earned her DDS degree from the University of Athens in 1994, her MS degree in Prosthodontics from the University of Missouri - Kansas City in 1997, and her MS degree in Maxillofacial Prosthodontics from the University of Texas in 1998. Dr. David Felton, President of the American College of Prosthodontists congratulates Dr. Dedi on her latest accomplishments.

Dr. Al Guckes

Chapel Hill, NC - Dr. Albert Guckes, Associate Professor in the Department of Prosthodontics, received the UNC School of Dentistry's most prestigious teaching award, the Richard F. Hunt Excellence in Pre Doctoral Teaching Award, at the annual Spurgeon Banquet on April 4, 2002. Recipients of the Hunt award are nominated and selected by the students. Nominees are identified using five basic criteria: fostering intellect, demonstrating competence and perspective in all aspects of dentistry, respecting patients and students, preparing superbly for classes, and offering appropriate and timely feedback. The Dental Foundation of North Carolina Inc. sponsors the Hunt Award. The award is given in memory of Dr. Richard F. Hunt, a member of the Class of 1955 who died in South America in a plane crash in 1968.

Dr. Guckes received a DDS degree from Temple University and a master's in Prosthodontics from the University of Washington. Before coming to Chapel Hill he was chief of Patient Care and Clinical Studies Section at the National Institutes of Dental Research.

Chapel Hill, NC - The 2002 Spurgeon Awards Banquet was held on April 4th. Awards for teaching excellence, staff appreciation, clinical excellence and academic achievement were presented. The banquet was planned and sponsored by the Spurgeon Dental Society. The Department of Prosthodontics received several awards:

PRESS RELEASE: March 16, 2002

Dallas, TX - Dr. Dina Dedi and Dr. Matthew Hopfensperger attended the Academy of Osseointegration 17th Annual Meeting "Advancing the Vision of Implant Dentistry" in Dallas, TX on March 14 - 16, 2002. Dr. Lyndon Cooper participated in the Corporate Forum as a part of the AO Meeting on March 14.

 
PRESS RELEASE: March 9, 2002

Drs. Al Guckes and David Felton

San Diego, CA - Dr. & Mrs. Albert Guckes and Dr. Dave Felton enjoyed the UNC Reception held during the International Association of Dental Research & American Association of Dental Research joint meeting in San Diego, CA on March 6 - 9, 2002. Dr. Guckes serves as Chair of the International Standards Organization sub-committee on dental implants. Dr. Felton served as co-chairperson of the Implantology Research - Implant Prosthodontics oral presentations session on March 9. His presentation entitled "Prosthetic complications in an implant overdenture population at 36 months" was the first one of the session. Dr. Lisa Lang (former UNC faculty) presented a poster at the IADR/AADR meeting entitled "Evaluation of the precision of fit between a universal abutment and various implant systems". Dr. Matthew Hopfensperger contributed to the research.

 
PRESS RELEASE: March 3, 2002

Drs. Leland Webb, Larry Breeding and their wives

San Diego, CA - Dr. Leland Webb (class of ' 78), Dr. Larry Breeding and their wives attended the American College of Prosthodontists Reception during the annual American Dental Education Association Meeting in San Diego, CA on March 3, 2002. Dr. Webb serves as Director of the Southeast Region of the Removable Prosthodontics Section of the ADEA. Dr. Breeding is a former UNC Prosthodontics faculty member and now teaches at the University of Mississippi School of Dentistry.

Dr. Lyndon Cooper gave a presentation on "How To Be A Good Mentor" at the ADEA Combined Removable Prosthodontics, Fixed Prosthodontics, and Biomaterials Program on March 5. The program objective was to equip educators with better skills in mentoring students into specialty training. Two students who work with Dr. Cooper presented posters at the IADR/AADR meeting later that week. Dr. Nancy Chaffee, adjunct faculty in UNC's Graduate Prosthodontics Program, also attended the ADEA Meeting.

Dr. Gerard Chiche

Chapel Hill, NC - The UNC Department of Prosthodontics was proud to host Dr. Gerard Chiche of LSU on January 11 for a 6-hour CE program entitled "Recipe for Predictable Anterior Esthetics" at the William and Ida Friday Center for Continuing Education in Chapel Hill. In this era of fitness and elegance, dental professionals must rapidly become an "Esthetician" of the smile. Dr. Chiche's program sited that basic esthetic principles combined with practical crown and bridge techniques can be formulated into a simple and systematic step-by-step approach. He told the 220 in attendance, his approach works with any presently available ceramic system and will help solve numerous esthetic problems with method and improved laboratory support in order to achieve predictable esthetic results. A practical outline of current fixed Prosthodontics techniques was also depicted in terms of armamentarium and practical products and techniques that work for tooth preparations, impressions, cementation and bonding and shade matching.

Dr. Chiche is the Helmer Professor and Chair of the Prosthodontics Dept at Louisiana State University in New Orleans where he also maintains an intramural restorative practice devoted to esthetics and implants. He holds membership in the American College of Prosthodontists, the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry, the American Academy of Crown and Bridge, the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry and the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society. He is director of the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry and is also, with Alain Pinaut the author of the textbook, Esthetics of Anterior Fixed Restorations published by Quintessence Publishing.
