Patient Information

What is a Prosthodontist?

A prosthodontist is a dentist who specializes in restoring natural teeth and creating and placing natural-looking substitute or prosthetic teeth. Prosthodontics is one of only eight dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association. A prosthodontist's professional education includes several years of additional training after dental school in an accredited advanced dental education program.

Thanks to the significant advances in dentistry over the last twenty years, prosthodontists are able to offer their patients a wide range of professional services.

These services include:

  • Replacement of Missing Teeth
  • Cosmetic Dentistry
  • Dental Implants and Other Advanced Technologies
  • Correction of Oral and Facial Problems

For more information about the specialty of Prosthodontics contact:

The American College of Prosthodontists
211 E. Chicago Avenue, Suite 1000
Chicago, IL 60611
Phone: 312-573-1260

The Department of Prosthodontics offers several opportunities for patient care:

Undergraduate Student Clinics

Students in the DDS program treat patients during their Junior and Senior years. For a screening appointment in the Undergraduate Student Clinics call (919) 966-2805.
Graduate Prosthodontics Clinic

Residents in the Graduate Program in Prosthodontics are dentists who are receiving training in the specialty of Prosthodontics. These residents treat patients requiring advanced techniques and materials, and those with implant and special care needs during their three year curriculum.

For more information call the Graduate Program Patient Care Coordinator at (919) 966-4259.

***At the present time, we are only accepting patients who are referred by their private dentist or from other clinics within the dental school. We have a waiting list of approximately 1 1/2 to 2 years for implants and crown and bridge work after the referral is made. Our waiting list is shorter for dentures, overdentures, and maxillofacial cases.
Dental Faculty Practice

Faculty from the Department of Prosthodontics provide specialized patient care in the Dental Faculty Practice Clinic. For more information or to make a new patient appointment call the DFP Clinic at (919) 966-2115 or (800) 832-9244.
Research Studies

Currently the Department of Prosthodontics is conducting a 5 year clinical trial on overdentures retained by two Astra Tech dental implants, and a 3 year clinical trial on immediately loaded Astra Tech ST implants.

For more information on the Astra Tech Clinical Trial, call the Astra Tech Study Coordinator at (919) 966-7796.

No additional patient participants needed for the Astra research studies at this time, thank you.
