Mission

The Center will provide leading-edge support and technology for the knowledge management system that will produce a digital curriculum to serve both the local educational needs of our students and further the development of Web-based distance education.

Purpose

A top teaching and academic priority for the School of Dentistry is the development of the Center for Educational Development and Informatics, which will coordinate the reform, development and delivery of our curricula at all levels of dental education – undergraduate, professional, and graduate. The goal of the Center is to establish a leadership role in dental education and to facilitate both the acquisition and dissemination of new knowledge to dental students, the dental community and public in the 21st century.

Goals

  • To provide a resource that assists faculty with the development of digital, web-based teaching/course materials.
  • To assist faculty members with the deployment and presentation of teaching and educational materials using modern day electronic/computer media to students, dental practitioners and citizens of North Carolina and beyond.
  • To assess the effectiveness of different modes of presenting course and educational materials through scholarly educational outcomes research.
  • To provide resources that will manage, maintain, and enhance new and rapidly developing technologies in classrooms & seminar rooms (classroom support).
  • To provide an enabling environment that permits scholarly research in information technologies and in the use/deployment of these technologies in the teaching and research environments.
  • To provide an enabling environment that fosters both private and government sponsored development and dissemination of novel educational materials through grants and contracts.
