RTP Site to House Research Operations During Construction

February 6, 2008 - The UNC-Chapel Hill School of Dentistry will, in March, begin a lease on a building to house the School’s research center facilities, faculty and staff during construction related to the Dental Sciences Building project.

UNC-Chapel Hill dental research is expected to begin moving into the facility in early April.

The building – located at 4301 Research Commons, 79 T.W. Alexander Drive in Research Triangle Park – is a mixed-use facility that consists of office space and research laboratory space. The School of Dentistry leased the first and third floors, which will provide a total of 68,800 gross square feet of research space that includes administrative, meeting and interaction space in support of research programs.

The first floor is 44,500 gross square feet, with 2,817 of that net square footage dedicated to administrative, meeting and interaction space; and 23,798 net square feet dedicated to laboratory and laboratory support space. A loading dock/receiving area is also on the first floor.

The third floor is 24,300 gross square feet, with 1,600 of that net square footage dedicated to administrative, meeting and interaction space; and 15,756 net square feet dedicated to laboratory and laboratory support space.

The laboratories are fully outfitted with modular casework and chemical fume hoods. Sterilizers, glass wash units, glassware dryers, cold rooms and freezers are among the other equipment. A standby generator will provide backup electrical service.

The Dental Research Center, built in 1967 on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus, is to be decommissioned in May, with its demolition set for July.
