Yamauchi receives Sunstar Professorship
CHAPEL HILL -- The School of Dentistry honored Mitsuo Yamauchi, UNC's first Sunstar Distinguished Professor of Oral Biology at a reception at the Carolina Inn, May 28. He is a professor of periodontology and director of the Collagen Biochemistry Laboratory at the UNC School of Dentistry. Yamauchi joined the school faculty in 1983.
"Dr. Yamauchi's research collaborations with the NASA space program, with the Binational Agriculture Research and Development Fund in Israel, and with Cryolife heart valve development program all attest to the international stature he has achieved. Now with the generous support of Sunstar Inc., Dr. Yamauchi will continue to be a treasured member of the University of North Carolina and its School of Dentistry," said John W. Stamm, dean at the UNC School of Dentistry.
"In appointing Mitsuo Yamauchi as the University's first Sunstar Distinguished Professor of Oral Biology, the faculty is recognizing one of UNC's finest researchers and teachers. Simultaneously the university expresses its appreciation to Sunstar Inc. of Osaka, Japan for its generosity and its commitment to supporting excellence in higher education," Stamm continued.
Sunstar Inc. a Japanese manufacturer of oral, hair and skin care products donated $333,000 to the school through the Dental Foundation of North Carolina, Inc. in 1996 qualifying the university for $167,000 from the state's Distinguished Professors Endowment Fund to establish a $500,000 endowment.
Sunstar Inc. is one of the largest manufacturers of toothbrushes in the world with plants in Japan, China and the United States. In 1988, Sunstar acquired the John O. Butler Co., which makes G.U.M. Oral-Care products, including toothbrushes, toothpaste and other oral health care devices. Sunstar's research and development of products to diagnose and prevent periodontal disease led the company to the School of Dentistry.
