Board of Governors Visit School of Dentistry

On Thursday, October 8, 1998 the School of Dentistry was honored with a visit from the UNC Board of Governors. Special thanks go to School of Dentistry alumnus and member of the Board of Governors, Dr. W. Kenneth Morgan, for arranging the visit. The Board received an up close and personal look at the school, seeing both the new and the old facilities.

After welcoming remarks from Dean Stamm, the group was treated to several demonstrations in the new preclinical simulation laboratory. Focusing on teaching technology, Dr. Stephen Bayne walked the Board thorough his material science course demonstrating the electronic syllabus, his online teaching material and the textbook he has online.

Dr. Anthony Molina demonstrated the use of the patient simulator units showing how the technology we now have enhances our ability to prepare students for patient treatment procedures. Dr. Ed Kanoy showed the Board our new intraoral camera, purchased by the Dental Parents, underscoring how technology expands the scope of our teaching capabilities. Dean Stamm acknowledged a founding member of the UNC Dental Parents, Mrs. Barbara Perry, who also serves on the Board of Governors.

Following a tour of the Dental Research center and walk through the old student clinic the group ended their tour with a visit to the DFP and the new student clinic on the third floor of Tarrson Hall. Dean Stamm noted that the new patient waiting area in the DFP was made possible by the generous gift of Board member, Mr. Phil Phillips and his wife, Sarah Boyle Phillips. Dr. Kanoy provided an overview of patient care and the services students provide as part of their dental education. He explained how computerization assists faculty and administrators as they track student progress. He also outlined some of the things that will be added to our electronic record as we move in the direction of paperless patient charts. The stark contrast between the old and new student clinics was clearly observed by all of the visitors.

Dean Stamm thanked Mr. Benjamin Ruffin, chair of the Board of Governors for making time in their busy schedule to visit the school and learn more about dentistry.
