Three School of Dentistry Students Awarded Hinman Scholarships

Three scholarships were presented to UNC School of Dentistry students at a special luncheon during the Hinman Dental Meeting, March 20, 1999 in Atlanta. DDS students Chris Cuomo and Bethany Saulpaugh each received $2000 Hinman Scholarships. Jennifer Boyd received a $750 Hinman Scholarship in recognition of her academic achievements in the Dental Hygiene program.

During her sophomore year in high school, Jennifer Boyd started working for her family dentist on a part-time basis helping out in the office. During the time that she worked with the dental team, she developed an interest in dental hygiene as a career. She pursued this interest and entered the dental hygiene program at UNC-CH as a junior transfer in 1998. Each semester since her enrollment in the dental hygiene program, she has been placed on the dean's list as recognition for academic excellence. When asked what she likes best about dental hygiene, her immediate response was "the interaction with patients." Jennifer, a native North Carolinian from Cary, hopes to return to Cary after graduation and work in a general dental practice.

Chris Cuomo, DDS Class of 2000, is a native of Newton, Connecticut. He attended Fordham University receiving a BS degree in Biology in 1994. He studied Cell Biology at the University of Connecticut in 1995. Chris' father is an Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon in Newton, CT. Chris volunteers at the OMFS clinic and was a volunteer for the "Career in Dentistry" program. He has been on the Dean's list all semesters.

Bethany Saulpaugh, DDS Class of 2001, is a native of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. She attended Middlebury College and received a BA degree in Biology and Environmental Studies in 1995. She is a member of the Honor Court and a part of the Mexico Project 1998-1999. Bethany has been on the Dean's List all semesters.
