24th Annual Spurgeon Dental Society Table Clinic Day

On Friday, April 16, 1999 the 24th Annual Spurgeon Dental Society Table Clinic Day took place in the hallway between Tarrson and Brauer Halls. Fourteen Dental Assisting, DDS and Advanced Education students participated for cash awards. The Table Clinic Day is sponsored by Dentsply International, North Carolina Chapter of the Academy of General Dentistry, International College of Dentists, UNC Dental Alumni Association, Omicron Kappa Upsilon, Learning Resources Center and the Spurgeon Dental Society.

Student chairperson, Ms. Sarah Tomlinson, a second year DDS student and Co-chair, Mr. Armin Abron, a first year DDS student supported by Ms. Liz Schramm from the Office of Academic Affairs, planned the event. Mr. Ben Booker from Dentsply International was present to present the Dentsply Award. Judging the competition was Dr. Susan Hadler, Department of Diagnostic Sciences and General Dentistry, Dr. Garland Hershey, Department of Orthodontics, Dr. Tim Wright, Department of Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Phoebus Madianos, Department of Periodontics, Dr. Leland Webb, Department of Prosthodontics and Ms. Mary George, Director of Allied Dental Programs.

Approximately 50 parents who were participating in Parent's Day were able to attend the judging and the awards presentations.

The following are the awards and the winners. Congratulations to all who participated in a very successful day.

Spurgeon Dental Society Dental Assisting Award. This $100 award was for the outstanding table clinic presented by a dental assisting student.

Angie Kelly and Melissa Turner: "Latex Sensitivity"

UNC Dental Alumni Association Clinical Science Award. This $150 award is for excellence in clinical science.

Kristina Coffield: "Helping Children with Cancer in the New Millenium"

UNC Dental Alumni Association Basic Science Award. This $150 award is for excellence in basic science.

James Chun: "In vitro Assessment of Second-Order Clearance Between Orthodontic Archwires and Bracket via Binding"

Spurgeon Dental Society Graduate Award. This $150 award was for the outstanding table clinic presented by a graduate student.

Dr. Pattarawadee Leelataweewud: "Adverse Events and Sedation Outcomes of Conscious Sedation in Pediatric Dental Patient"

North Carolina Chapter of the Academy of General Dentistry Award. This $150 award was for the outstanding table clinic oriented to the general practice of dentistry.

Dr. Tegwyn Hughes: "Predicting the Risk of Caries at the School Level"

International College of Dentists Award. This $150 award was for the outstanding table clinic with the most originality in concept, material and presentation which is a significant contribution to the clinical practice of dentistry.

Suzanne Bird and Meg Brinskelle: "Characterization of Wear Debris From Sealant Material Over Time."

Spurgeon Dental Society Allied Dental Award. This $150 award was for the outstanding table clinic presented by an allied dental education student.

Mindy Carpenter, Beth Cox, and Qun Tang: "Home Care for Dental Implants"

Dentsply International Award. This award sponsored by Dentsply International is presented to the most competitive table clinic to compete in the national competition at the 1999 annual meeting of the American Dental Association in Honolulu, Hawaii. An all expense paid trip to Hawaii and the chance at a cash prize make up the award.

Chris Harris: "Incipient Analysis of Mesenchymal Stem Cell-Derived Osteogenesis"
