Special Smiles - A Success

The athletes are gone, the campus is back to the quiet of summer and School of Dentistry is basking in the success of its contribution to the Special Smiles program of the Special Olympics World Games. Nancy St Onge, a dental educator in the department of pediatric dentistry, her team of 65 volunteers from the School of Dentistry and UNC Dental Alumni, played an important role in screening 2238 athletes from June 26th thorough July 4th at the Healthy Athletes program at the UNC Student Union. Eighty-nine athletes received 771 sealants and 1911 athletes were fitted for mouth guards. St Onge reports that meeting so many athletes from the United States and other countries was a wonderful experience for her and the volunteers.
