Kegler Named Alumni Scholar

Third year dental student Clarence C. Kegler has been named the UNC Dental Alumni Association's first Alumni Scholar. The $3,000 award is based on financial need, academic performance and an interview by the Alumni Scholarship Committee. Born in Gastonia, N.C., he attended North Carolina State University.

Kegler is a member of the School of Dentistry Honor Court, presently holding the position of Attorney General. Active in professional dental organizations, he is a member of the American Student Dental Association, and is vice-president of the Student National Dental Association. Other extracurricular activities include volunteering for the Big Brother/Big Sister program, the Student Health Action Coalition and the Head Start program. He also completed an extramural rotation at the SOME (So Others May Eat) in Washington, D.C. after his first year of dental school.

Runners-up Chelita Norris and Bethany Saulpaugh will receive $500 awards.

This year the UNC Dental Alumni Association started an endowment to support the annual scholarship. The Association will maintain the scholarship until the endowment grows to support the Scholarship Fund.
