Slade Participates in Legislative Workshop

Dr. Gary D. SladeGary Slade, assistant professor of dental ecology, represented the U.N.C School of Dentistry at the 10th Annual AADS/John O. Butler Faculty Legislative Workshop September 25-29, 1999, in Washington, D.C. Fifteen dental educators and university representatives participated in the program.

Attendees received in-depth briefings on a wide range of topics including federal appropriations and authorization processes, programs within the Bureau of Health Professions and the National Institutes of Dental and Craniofacial Research. Other topics covered were higher education, tax issues, and the Children's Health Insurance Program.

The 15 participants gained useful knowledge about the legislative process and acquired key skills that will assist them in becoming effective advocates for their dental schools and for the dental education community at the federal level.

AADS interacts with members of Congress, their staffs, and various Federal agencies to advocate for dental education programs. The AADS is the one national organization that speaks exclusively for dental education.

The workshop is made possible in part by the generous support of the John O. Butler Company.
