50th Anniversary Kickoff
Chartered by the North Carolina Legislature in 1949, the UNC School of Dentistry opened its doors to the first class of students in 1950. While those first students were trained in World War II Quonset huts, students today are educated in a complex comprising five building, including the state-of-the-art Tarrson Hall. In addition to being the only dental school in North Carolina, the UNC School of Dentistry is recognized both nationally and internationally as one of the best dental schools in the world. The School has a four-fold mission: (1) to educate dental, dental hygiene and dental assisting students; (2) to provide dental, oral and craniofacial care for patients; (3) to generate new knowledge, technology, treatments and products through research; and (4) to provide additional professional and public services for the people of North Carolina.
Dean John Stamm and Dr. Nona Breeland, past-president of the Dental Foundation of North Carolina, Inc., cut the School's 50th anniversary cake at Saturday's tailgate prior to the UNC-Duke football game. Some 100 alumni and friends joined in the pre-game festivities that included Bullock's barbecue, Tar Heel tattoos and stickers and pom poms for the game. The day was capped off with a 38 - 0 Tar Heel victory over Duke.
Among the tailgate revelers were Class of 1991 alums, Drs. Richard and Amy Hunt of Rocky Mount and their children (left to right) Charlotte, Richard and Caroline. Amy Hunt is a member of the Dental Alumni Association Board of Directors.
