School Hosts 45th Annual Meeting of the SCDDE

Neither rain, nor sleet, nor a few inches of snow would stop the attendees at the 45thSouthern Conference of Dental Dean and Examiners held at the Carolina Inn January 21-23, 2000. While the weather outside was frightful, the sixty participants stayed inside and enjoyed a delightful meeting. Representatives from 12 of the 16 dental schools in the Southern conference were represented by 18 deans and faculty members. The other participants represented 11 of the 14 state dental boards who were invited to attend.

The theme of the conference "Chapel Hill, the southern part of heaven, where tradition meets technology" offered the perfect mix of topics. SCDDE president, Dean John Stamm, and North Carolina State Board president, Delma Kinlaw welcomed the group with the Southern hospitality for which UNC and Chapel Hill are renowned. Everyone enjoyed the humor and local knowledge of demographer and noted Southern author John Shelton Reed, whose discussion on "what's Southern about the South?" set the stage for a great meeting. Other presentations focusing on information technology, the Internet and the electronic transmission and storage of patient data rounded out an interesting and informative program.

The School was thrilled to offer a demonstration of the some of the latest technology for broadcasting over the Internet. Participants at the Carolina Inn viewed a WebCast, transmitted electronically from the School's simulation laboratory. Real time video, PowerPoint slides, electronic overheads and tooth preparation images captured from an endoscopic microscope were shown as examples of how Internet technology can be used for distance delivery. An archived version of the WebCastis available (requires free RealPlayer plug-inG2 or newer).

In spite of rather cold temperatures and a little snow and ice, everyone in attendance seemed to appreciate the meeting's educational content and social activities.

The SCDDE is pleased to thank our corporate sponsors whose generous support helped to make this meetings possible. We are especially grateful to Colgate-Palmolive, DentalEZ/Columbia Dentoform, as well as the Procter & Gamble Company, ADEC, Practicon/ Frasaco and Brasseler USA.
