Virology Colloquium

On February 24th, over 120 students, faculty members and scientists from UNC, NCSU, Duke and the Research Triangle Park gathered at the Friday Continuing Education Center for the 7th annual UNC-CH. Diane Shugars, assistant professor in the department of dental ecology at the UNC School of Dentistry, and department of microbiology and immunology at the UNC School of Medicine, organized this year's event.

Featured speakers were Elliott Kieff from Harvard University, and Brigham and Women's Hospital; Susan Weiss of the University of Pennsylvania; and Vanessa Hirsch of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease. Their presentations reviewed the cellular and viral mechanisms through which viruses cause disease and the status of HIV vaccine development.

Senior virology graduate students summarized research projects currently underway in the laboratories on campuses. Following the scientific session, participants exchanged research ideas with the speakers and other participants during the luncheon.

An NIH-sponsored training grant was the primary sponsor of the meeting. Additional financial support was provided by the department of microbiology and immunology, department of biochemistry and biophysics, UNC Center for AIDS Research, Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, UNC School of Medicine and Office of Graduate Studies and Research.
