BOG Elects New Chancellor

On Friday, April 14, the Board of Governors elected James Moeser as the ninth chancellor of UNC-CH.

Dr. Moeser sent the following greeting to the University community:

It's official. The University of North Carolina Board of Governors elected me April 14 as the ninth chancellor to serve Carolina. I am thrilled to be taking on that exciting challenge and look forward to working with and on behalf of all of you.

I wanted to take this brief opportunity to communicate directly with the Carolina family, some of whom I had the pleasure of meeting in a welcoming event held Friday in the Morehead Building.

I start work on August 15, and Susan and I cannot wait to become permanent residents of Chapel Hill and members of this extraordinary University community. In the meantime, I know that Interim Chancellor Bill McCoy will continue his proficient and dedicated service in South Building.

All of you should be proud to be such an important part of one of the very best public universities in America. Carolina is unique because of its many strengths in areas including the liberal arts, the basic sciences, the professional schools, the five health sciences schools, and the UNC Health Care system. Carolina is well known around the nation and world for just how well those interests work together to carry out the missions of teaching, research and public service that benefit the people of North Carolina, our nation, and our world.

I know that the spirit of collaboration and cooperation here in Chapel Hill is strong. That was a major reason I was interested in becoming Carolina's next leader in a role that will be the greatest honor of my professional life.

I'm excited to be your new chancellor.

– James Moeser, Chancellor-Elect
