Kanoy Receives Hunt Award
Ed Kanoy Jr., clinical professor in prosthodontics, received the Richard F. Hunt Memorial Award for Excellence in Pre-doctoral Teaching during the Spurgeon Banquet at the George Watts Hill Alumni Center. The award is the school's most prestigious teaching award.
In announcing the award, John Stamm, dean of the UNC School of Dentistry, read remarks from nominations, "He goes above and beyond the call of duty time and again to help students and patients achieve excellent results. He understands students, and provides critical information to help students prepare for dentistry beyond the walls of the school."
Kanoy is a 1978 graduate of the UNC School of Dentistry and began his dental career at the school soon after graduation as an instructor in the department of fixed prosthodontics. He was appointed associate director of clinical services in 1991 and subsequently served as director, assistant dean and associate dean until December 1999.
The Loblolly Dental Study Club established the Hunt award through the Dental Foundation of North Carolina Inc. in 1969 as a memorial to Richard F. Hunt, a native of Rocky Mount. Hunt, a 1955 graduate of the UNC School of Dentistry, died in a plane crash in 1968. His son, Richard F. Hunt, Jr., a 1989 graduate of the School of Dentistry practices dentistry in Rocky Mount, N.C.
