New Chairman for Operative Dentistry
Edward Swift, Jr., professor and graduate program director in the department of operative dentistry at the UNC School of Dentistry, will become chairman of that department July 1, 2000.
In announcing the appointment, John Stamm, dean at the school, said "Dr. Swift is a nationally and internationally recognized leader in operative dentistry, particularly for his special expertise in adhesives and dentin bonding agents. We are extremely fortunate to have Dr. Swift assume this leadership role. Our institution, and most specifically our students, colleagues and patients, will benefit from his vision and leadership."
Born in Bellefonte, Penn., Swift moved to Greenville, S.C. when he was 10. He received his dental degree at the Medical University of South Carolina at Charleston and a master's degree in operative dentistry from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. Swift began his dental career in private practice in Travelers Rest, S.C. in 1979. Following six years in practice, he was appointed instructor in the department of restorative dentistry at the School of Dentistry at the University of Mississippi. Swift moved to Iowa in 1986 where he was appointed clinical instructor in operative dentistry at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. He was later promoted to associate professor with tenure. In 1993 he joined the UNC faculty as associate professor with tenure in the department of operative dentistry and was promoted to professor in 1999. Swift has been active in the North Carolina Chapter of the American Association for Dental Research, serving as president in 1997-98.
Currently, he is associate editor of the Journal of Esthetic Dentistryand serves on the editorial boards of the electronic Journal of Dentistryand the Journal Asthetiche Zahnmedizin.
Swift replaces Harold Heymann, professor of operative dentistry, who had led the department for 12 years. Heymann will remain on the faculty.
