Astra Tech Inc. and Prosthodontics Collaboration

On October 30, Niklas Lidskog, president of Astra Tech Inc. and seven of his corporate colleagues visited the UNC School of Dentistry to celebrate the conclusion of six years (two three-year agreements) of successful collaboration and to formally announce the initiation of $1.2 million for expanded research, education and patient care initiatives within the department of prosthodontics. The celebration included a reception for Astra Tech and a luncheon at the School of Dentistry for 110 faculty, staff and residents.
During the next five years, the Astra Tech grant will provide research support as well as new equipment and implants for undergraduate education and training. Lyndon Cooper, associate professor in the department of prosthodontics is the principal investigator. Co-investigators are David Felton, chair of prosthodontics; Nancy Chaffee, director of graduate prosthodontics; John Moriarity, associate professor of periodontics; and Debra Sacco, assistant professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery. Faculty and graduate students of these three departments will share in development of novel implant therapies and devices, establishing novel education programs at a national and international level, and promoting improved dental rehabilitation for the residents of North Carolina. This academic/corporate partnership proudly acknowledges a decade-long mutual commitment to building a framework for international leadership in implant dentistry.
