Steven Offenbacher DDS, PhD, professor in the department of periodontology, has been selected to receive one of three Special Impact Awards from the National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition (HMHB). Each year the award recognizes exemplary efforts in maternal and child health. The 2001 awards focus on individuals and organizations that are working to assure the best possible start for infants through research, support and education on pregnancy and related issues. Offenbacher's research has established an association between periodontitis and preterm, low birth-weight babies. The award will be present in May 2001 at Washington, D.C. HMHB is a network of over 200 members and includes 79 state and local coalitions and organizations such as the March of Dimes, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.
