Dental Coordinators for SHAC
Four-second year dental students Hamir Contractor, Tiarra Gordon, Paul Henao-Vaner and Donny Hull will serve as SHAC dental coordinators for next year (summer 2001-0).
SHAC is a student-run organization that provides free health care to the under served population of the Chapel Hill community. Students from the professional health affairs schools at UNC-Chapel Hill serve the community while developing skills and working with other health care disciplines.
Coordinating the dental activities at SHAC is a major responsibility according to Sona Isharani, a third year dental student who is a current coordinator at the clinic. Under the supervision of local volunteer dentists, the student coordinators manage the entire operation each night. They are instrumental in organizing the school's involvement by recruiting School of Dentistry students to work at SHAC and checking out supplies from the school. They also participate at the Hispanic health fair each fall.
Dental SHAC is located at the Orange County Health Department Dental Clinic in Carr Mill Mall. The services at the clinic include screenings, dental prophylaxis, extractions and simple restorative treatment. Second year dental students and dental hygiene students provide the services with help from the dental assisting and first year dental students.
Medical SHAC, located in a community clinic on Lloyd Street in Carrboro, also provides free medical care to the community and is staffed by students from the professional schools such as medicine, nursing, physical therapy, social work, pharmacy, and others.
