Dr. Clifford Sturdevant Receives an Award

Clifford Sturdevant, DDS, professor emeritus in the department of operative dentistry, received the Meritorious Achievement Award from the North Carolina Dental Society at its annual meeting in Myrtle Beach. The nominee must be a member in good standing of the North Carolina Dental Society who has demonstrated in recent years significant achievement in dentistry. A person may qualify for this award in the areas of leadership, academics, research, health care delivery or professionalism.

Sturdevant came to Chapel Hill in 1950 as part of the original dental faculty. His knowledge, energy and dedication provided valuable assistance in planning and building the new dental school, which opened in 1952. He was chairman of the department of operative dentistry for 20 years. Sturdevant was also instrumental in establishing one of the first dental school-based research programs in operative dentistry. Sturdevant is well-known as co-author and senior editor of the world's leading textbook on operative dentistry: The Art and Science of Operative Dentistry.Under his leadership, the book was revised three times and a fourth edition is now in the editing phase.
