Dental Hygiene Students is Captain of UNC Varsity Cheerleading Squad

Amanda Simpson

Dental hygiene student Amanda Simpson, BSDH '02, has been named captain of the UNC Varsity Cheerleaders. Simpson joined the cheerleading squad as the only freshman in 1998. She says practice, scheduled lifting times, alumni appearances and games, requires a commitment of approximately 25 hours per week.

"By taking on this leadership, I have encountered a dramatic change from the previous three years that I cheered. Not only am I responsible for myself and my abilities, I am responsible for the actions and skills of the entire squad," said Simpson.

"This has taught me many important lessons in time management, leadership and pride. I am devoted to the squad, but must also uphold the responsibility to each of my patients. Overall, the opportunities and privileges I have been presented with for cheering far outweigh the stresses on my time and my body. The experiences I will take away from UNC are all attributed to my life as a Carolina Varsity Cheerleader. When taking a step back, I would not trade a moment of my cheerleading career for any other memory," said Simpson.

Last year, the UNC-CH Cheerleaders squad placed 4th at UCA Collegiate National Championships in Orlando, Florida.
