CCID Scholars Program Welcomes New Students

Emily Eastwood Henderson

Georgios Bobetsis, DDS, and Emily Eastwood Henderson were named CCID Scholars for the 2001-02 school year. Both are enrolled in the Pathogenesis PhD. training program. Henderson is 2001 graduate of the College of William and Mary with a major in biology. She recently did a summer internship under Daniel Conrad in the department of microbiology and immunology at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. Bobetsis is currently pursuing a joint program in pathogenesis and periodontology.

The CCID Scholars Program, begun in 2000, was created to aid in the recruitment, education, training, and research opportunities of students interested in studying pathogenesis, particularly the systemic relationship between inflammatory conditions, health status, and diseases such as atherosclerosis, HIV, cancer, arthritis, periodontal disease, and asthma. The ultimate goal of the CCID Scholars Program is to train individuals for careers in research and teaching in areas related to infectious disease and host response.

Bobetsis and Henderson join second-year CCID Scholars Shannon Pop and Jenny Cutalo. Cutalo is working with Kenneth Tomer and Thomas Kunkel at NIEHS in determining the structure of the C-terminal domain of the DNA repair protein MLH1 and its binding partner PMS1. Pop is interested in the pathobiology of Type I diabetes and is working in the laboratory of CCID investigator Roland Tisch.
