Three graduate students in department of orthodontics recently received
awards and honors. Carlos Nurko, DDS, MS, first year resident was
named diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and received
the IADR/Colgate "Research in Prevention Travel Award" at the 80th IADR
General Session in March for "Effect of an Infant Oral Health Educational
Program for Caries Prevention." He received $2,000 for expenses to attend
the IADR General Session.Nurko also received the Orthodontic Faculty Development
Fellowship Award (To start July 2002) from the American Association of
Orthodontists Foundation. He is waiting for the official confirmation
of the award amount. Kim Edwards, DMD, second year resident and
Darren Ravassipour DDS, and second year resident received membership
in the Alpha Epsilon Lambda, a national honor society for graduate and
professional students. The AEL recognizes students who have distinguished
themselves in leadership, scholarship and intellectual development, contributions
to the academic department and university and ethical behavior. Edwards
and Ravassipour were honored, along with other graduate students, April
17 at a dinner at the Carolina Club.
