Pediatric Dentistry Collects Awards at American Academy of Pediatric

The department of pediatric dentistry collected five awards at the recent
Annual American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry meeting in Denver. Graduate
students Matt Savage and Marianne Mills received two of three Omnii Awards.
Each received $7,500 for research support and travel expenses to present
at the IADR/AADR meeting. Savage's project is "Age of the first dental
visit: effects on subsequent utilization and related costs in high-risk
preschool children". Jessica Lee is his mentor. Mills' project is "Conscious
sedation of pediatric dental patients: an investigation of chloral hydrate,
hydroxyzine pamoate, and meperidien versus meperidine, hydroxyzine pamoate,
and midazolam hydrochloride." Diane Dilley is her mentor. The department
has received five of 12 Omnii awards that have been presented in its four-year
history.
Jessica Lee and Julie Blackwood Dimock received Graduate Research Awards.
This competitive award recognizes excellence in graduate student research.
Each received $500 for meeting registration and travel support to the
annual session of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry to present
the data. Dimock presented "Evaluation of pumice, bur and air abrasion
on sealant microleakage" and Lee presented "The effects of WIC on dental
Medicaid utilization by children".
Julie Blackwood Dimock also received the Rick Pugh Award that recognizes
scoring in the top three percent of the written section of the American
Board of Pediatric Dentistry examination. Dimock is the third Rick Pugh
Award Winner by School of Dentistry residents in the last six years.
