Dean
John Stamm formally confirmed today that Dr. Linda Levin has been recommended
to the University as the next permanent Chair of the Department of Endodontics.
The five-year appointment is effective

. Doctor Levin emerged from a
thorough internal search process that involved all of the current Endodontic
faculty members as well as key staff personnel.
Several of the alumni of the Endodontics Department have also voiced
their support for Dr. Levin as the next Chair of the Department.
Doctor Levin obtained her BA from Duke
University
in 1977, after which she earned her DDS (1983), MS (1985), and PhD (1995) from
the
University

. Doctor Levin received her Board
certification in 2002. Doctor
Levin began her academic career at UNC in 1987 and developed a collaborative
research program in pulp biology. She
has earned NIH and industry funding in support of her research.
Throughout her years as a full-time faculty member, Dr. Levin has been
a superb teacher at both the predoctoral and graduate levels.
Moreover, she has been an enormously active and successful clinician
who has provided important leadership in the School's Dental Faculty
Practice.
Doctor Levin succeeds Dr. Martin Trope, J. B. Freedland Professor of
Endodontics, who led the Department superbly for nine years.
Doctor Trope rejoins the teaching faculty at the UNC School of
Dentistry, and will focus his efforts to accelerate and further develop
several key initiatives begun under his leadership.
In addition he will serve as a key mentor for the Endodontics graduate
program at UNC.
"Doctor Linda Levin has consistently achieved excellence in teaching, patient
care and research. She has an
energetic yet calm demeanor that suits her extremely well for academic and
