Director of NIDCR Visits the School
Dean
Stamm and the faculty, staff and students are delighted to welcome Lawrence
Tabak, DDS, PhD, Director of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial
Research (NIDCR) to the School of Dentistry. Dr. Tabak will meet with
faculty and student researchers throughout the day. The School is honored
that Dr. Tabak is able to spend this time with us; to meet our investigators
and tour our facilities and see first-hand, some of the work we are doing.
A special lecture/discussion forum is planned at 1:00 pm today in 407
Brauer Hall. Dr. Tabak will speak on The Post-Genomic Era Enters
the Mouth. Following the presentation Dr. Tabak will take questions
and discuss new developments and future directions for the NIDCR.
Dr. Tabak was appointed as the NIDCRs seventh director in September,
2000. As Director, he provides leadership for a team of 450 scientists,
administrators and support staff with an approximate annual budget of
$371 million. His research focuses on the functional roles played by glycoproteins
during development.
Prior to joining the NIH, Dr. Tabak was Senior Associate Dean for Research
of the School of Medicine and Dentistry, and Director of the Center for
Oral Biology in the Aab Biomedical Research Institute, in the University
of Rochester. He created the first summer research program for under-represented
dental students, which was funded in partnership with NIDCR, the University
of Rochester, and industry. This program served as a model for additional
programs currently active around the country.
Dr. Tabak received his undergraduate degree from the City College of
the City University of New York in 1972, his DDS from Columbia University
in 1977, and a PhD and Certificate of Proficiency in Endodontics from
the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1981 and 1985 respectively.
