UNC OMFS Showered
with Honors at the 85th AAOMS

The UNC OMFS program was showered with
honors during the opening ceremonies of at the 85th AAOMS meeting
in Orlando. The Donald B. Osborn Award for
Excellence in Education was
given to Dr. Tim Turvey. Turvey acknowledged this recognition as a pinnacle
of his career as an educator and that this tribute meant more to him than
any other acknowledgment he could have received.
Dr. Raymond White received three prestigious
awards.

The AAOMS Distinguished Service Award which is given to a member who has contributed significant time and effort
to the AAOMS programs, committees and helping the organization and its
members fulfill the organization's missions.
The Research
Recognition Award is given to an individual who has distinguished
himself by demonstrating excellence in scientific contributions to Oral and
Maxillofacial Surgery. White was selected to receive this award because of
his lifetime commitment to fostering the science of our specialty. Early in
his career, White reported on clinical research topics including tooth
transplantation, trauma and orthognathic surgery. His most recent
contributions to the AAOMS sponsored third molar clinical trials are
substantial and they will ensure the healthful future of all OMFS.
White was also recognized for the best scientific paper published in
the Journal of OMFS during the year. The award recognized three consecutive
papers reporting the findings of the third molar project. This award was
accepted by White on behalf of himself and coauthors and UNC School of
Dentistry faculty colleagues George Blakey, Steven Offenbacher and Ceib
Phillips.
Presentations made by UNC OMFS Faculty and
Residents included three
abstracts--third year resident, Matt Jacks,
faculty, Paul Tiwana and Raymond White presenting for the late Dr. Susan Foy presented papers
related to the third molar clinical trials.
Other presentations at the meeting included
a symposium paper by George Blakey for Professor Emeritus Dr. Bill Terry on
the Use of Steroids for Giant Cell Tumors.
Tim Turvey presented a surgical round table on Myocutaneous and Myoosseous flaps
for OMF reconstruction.
Ramon
Ruiz presented two surgical clinics on cleft
lip and palate reconstruction and craniofacial surgery, a presentation on
Pierre-Robin Sequence, and was recognized as the new Chair of the
Orthognathic/Cleft/Craniofacial Section for the new OMSAT Examination.
