Sidewalks on South Side of
Library Closed
The sidewalks and stairs around the Health Sciences Library on the south
side, between MacNider and the library, and down S. Columbia Street toward
the dental school buildings, will be closed for several months. This is
necessary to allow the contractor to use the south entrances to the library
during the demolition and renovation of our upper floors.
Access and handicapped access at the north end of the building will be
maintained, and
the current entrance facing MacNider will remain open until further notice.
Journals Are Back
ALL journals are back in the library! Bound journals are in the basement in
our new compact shelving. Current journals are on the first floor.
Books
published before 1992 will return when the renovation is complete in 2004.
These books can be retrieved from storage upon request in 2-3 business days.

The library has 4 new group study rooms, 16 public computers, and
comfortable seating throughout the first floor and basement. Study rooms
have whiteboards and are equipped for viewing audiovisual materials.

online using your laptop.

Meet the Author: Dr. Neil
Shulman - December 4
Dr. Neil Shulman, author of Your Body, Your Health, will be visiting the
library as a part of his whirlwind visit to Chapel Hill. Dr. Shulman uses
humor to share his advocacy for improving patient communications and
increasing health literacy. He is perhaps best known for his book, Doc
Hollywood, which was made into a movie starring Michael J. Fox.

Improving Health Literacy
http://www.hsl.unc.edu/healthliteracy.cfm
Did you know that limited literacy is a stronger predictor of health status
than age, income, employment status, education level, and racial or ethnic
group? Based on results of the National Adult Literacy Survey, half of your
patients may not be able to read, understand, and make effective use of
health information. The Health Sciences Library can provide in-service
training on Health Literacy for your staff. Get in touch with Jean Blackwell
(Jean_Blackwell@unc.edu, 919-966-0958) for more information.
