I am extremely pleased to announce that Dr. Stephen Bayne has been elected Vice President of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR).  His term of office will be approved by the IADR Council at the March 2004 meeting in Honolulu and he will begin serving immediately thereafter, cycling from Vice President to President-Elect and then President.  This is a major distinction for the UNC School of Dentistry.  Doctor Bayne will be the first UNC faculty member to hold this prestigious leadership position.

Doctor Bayne has been a dedicated and stalwart supporter of dental research since his first IADR presentation in 1977. He has held all of the offices of NC Section of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) and served several terms as our NC-AADR Councilor. He was elected AADR Member-at-Large in 1992. He completed a three-year term as AADR Treasurer before his election to all the line offices in 1997 which culminated in his term as AADR President in the 2000.

Doctor Bayne is a solid scientist, a superb student mentor, and a productive author.  For his staunch support of student research efforts, Dr. Bayne was honored as the first recipient of the Distinguished Mentor Award in 1997 by the UNC Student Research Group.   Throughout out his career at UNC, Dr. Bayne has served as an excellent ambassador for our School of Dentistry, as well as for the IADR/AADR Dental Materials Group.  Please join me in extending warm congratulations to Dr. Bayne for his distinguished accomplishment.
