The Mission

The mission of the Comprehensive Center for Inflammatory Disorders (CCID) is to understand the underlying mechanisms of inflammatory disorders or conditions, and to develop effective treatments for these inflammatory disorders through research, training, patient care, and outreach initiatives. The CCID is a part of the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry, and focuses its attention to the link between oral inflammatory disorders such as Periodontal Disease and their effect on systemic inflammatory disorders such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, and/or the delivery of pre-term low birth weight children. The CCID faculty conducts research on the basic mechanisms of inflammation, investigates the causes and progression of Periodontal Disease and other inflammatory disorders, treats patients and develops new therapies for Periodontal Disease, Cardiovascular Disease, Diabetes, HIV, and also at risk pregnant women, and provides increased education and health services to professionals and the public in the area of Oral and Systemic Inflammatory Disorders. The goal of the Center for Inflammatory Disorders is to integrate basic, clinical, and health services research, education, and patient care for inflammatory disorders to provide improved research, clinical and educational opportunities for health care professionals and the public in the area of Oral Health and Medicine.
