PROFESSIONAL DRESS FOR STUDENTS OF THE SCHOOL OF DENTISTRY UNIVERSTIY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILL
(Adopted by the Spurgeon Dental Society, Fall 2002)
- Clean clinical gowns should be worn at all times when providing patient care. The student's nametag should be properly displayed.
- Clean neat scrubs will be accepted.
- Lab coats are strongly recommended during laboratory sessions to protect students.
- Appropriate pants and skirts should be worn. This excludes blue jeans, shorts, and other inappropriate attire. Skirts must be of proper professional length (knee length).
- Shorts and jeans will be allowed in lecture halls only. No jogging shorts. Clinical and patient areas should be avoided when wearing shorts and jeans.
- Shoes should be clean and closed-toed. No sandals or open-toed shoes should be worn in clinic or lab. However, lecture days are not included in this rule.
- Appropriate shirts and blouses should be worn. No halter or tank tops allowed.
- Each student is expected to be on his or her best ecological behavior in keeping locker areas, clinical facilities, and preclinical labs in order and depositing all trash in the receptacles.
- Hair should be pulled back or sufficiently short such that is does not fall into the face of the student or patient during work.
- Nails and cuticles must be kept clean and trimmed at all times.
- Proper personal and oral hygiene is a must for each student.
- Earrings and jewelry should be kept to a minimum. Tongue rings are strongly discourage due to ADA positions on their effects on oral health or that we discourage them in the patient population.
