Minutes
February 11, 2002

In Attendance (14) Spurgeon: President: Danielle Tart, Vice President: Matt Barefoot, Treasurer: Rob Sanborn, Secretary: Marsha Black The rest in attendance was recorded on the attendance sheet.

Meeting called to order at 5:15pm.

Nicole Scheffler past-president of Spurgeon introduced the new Spurgeon Dental Society officers. President: Danielle Tart, Vice President: Matt Barefoot, Treasurer: Rob Sanborn, and Secretary: Marsha Black

Old Business:
  1. Spurgeon Awards Banquet: The banquet will be held Thursday; April 4, 2002 at 6:30pm.
  2. Table Clinics: April 12, 2002 at Parent's Weekend Eric Kerr is the Table Clinic Representative
  3. White Coat Ceremony: April 12, 2002 during Parent's Weekend. First years should be notified concerning this ceremony.
  4. Spring Picnic: Discussion concerning what the organization should do about the picnic? Decision was made to have the picnic in the Fall and have someone sponsor the event. Danielle is going to contact Mark McIntrye from Proctor and Gamble about sponsoring the picnic.
  5. Vendor Day: There is money from vendor day. For an organization to obtain this money they must submit a proposal to Mr. Tom Luten. Within the proposal must be what it is going to be used for and a budget report. Next Vendor Day: How can we make this better? Need to get letters for contacts by next meeting and send them out. Will discuss a date for the next vendor day at next meeting. One member mentioned about trying to have vendor day on Dental Research and Review Day next year.
  6. Student Lounge Renovations: The renovations are to be completed by April 12. The windows are to be tinted and furniture reupholstered. The lounge is to be painted and we are waiting an estimate from campus.
  7. Senior Class Gift: They are open for suggestions. The 2002 class is thinking about placing something up near an entrance with a plaque saying Class of 2002.
  8. Bulletin Board: President Danielle Tart spoke with Secretary Marsha Black about the Spurgeon bulletin boards. The names on the 2nd floor bulletin board need to be updated and the minutes need to be typed and placed on the other Spurgeon bulletin board.
  9. Donut Hour with Dean Stamm: Should have donut hour once in the Fall and Spring semesters and include Dr. Brunson and Dean Maxiner.
  10. Student Newsletter (The Right Bite): Discussion whether to keep the newsletter on web or print it. Nicole Walker places information on the student websites. President will gives an update at next meeting once contacting OCIS.
  11. Prosthodontics Lab: Everything is going fine in regards to cases being completed.
  12. Exam Scheduling Policy: There is an exam policy posted on the Spurgeon Bulletin Board. There seems to be problems with having too many exams back to back, etc. President asked each class to keep her posted on the situations in regards to the exam policy.
  13. Excused time-off for travel to National Meetings and for Interviews Proposal: Nicole Scheffler wrote a proposal in regards to excused time-off. Danielle Tart is going to look into where the proposal is in regards of being approved or not.
  14. New Organizations: North Carolina Dental Society is one of the new organizations. Helping Hands Organization will not be recognized until they have a representative at the meeting.
  15. NCDF: stress relief/goody bags for students and pot luck luncheon for those taking the National Boards, Danielle Tart is to contact Mark McIntyre for sponsoring this function.
  16. Kaplan Board Review: The board review has been implemented. There is a discount if 40 people sign up. $425
  17. Committee Meetings-attendance and appointments; Discussion concerning whether to have a faculty member in attendance at Spurgeon meetings. It was concluded that we would meet with Mr. Tom Luten after a Spurgeon meeting to address concerns bought up at the Spurgeon meeting.
  18. Funds for Spurgeon to be increased: There will be a proposal to increase the dues.
New Business:
  1. Constitution: The revised constitution should be completed by the end of semester.
  2. Lounge: The lounge should be renovated by April 12.
  3. Spurgeon Banquet: previously discussed, Will be held April 4, 2002
  4. Table Clinics: previously discussed, Will be held April 12.
  5. Welcome Lunch: Needs more organization. This past welcome lunch there was not enough food.
  6. Hard Copies-Notes: Do you the classes prefer hard copies or electronic syllabus? A suggestion was made about having course packs. Some say it is hard to study off the computer. Danielle is to check with OCIS about hot sink into the daily calendar.
